There are many sexually transmitted infections (STI’s) and it is easy to be tested for these. It is a good idea to be tested for STI’s even if you have no symptoms – this is known as an asymptomatic screen. You should get this type of screening if you change your partner or have unprotected sex (without a condom). It is easy to be screened using a urine sample for men and a simple swab for women. Some people may have symptoms of an infection such as rashes, spots or discharge. It is important to be tested for a variety of infections and this is known as a symptomatic screen. You can only get a symptomatic screen from the main sexual health clinic at palmers in Jarrow. This is because the equipment is available at this clinic that can be used to diagnose some infections while you are in the clinic. By doing this you will be able to start the treatment needed for the infection diagnosed. Samples will be sent to the hospital laboratory (we do not include your name on these samples to protect your confidentiality and use your clinic number instead). A symptomatic screen will test for Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea, HIV, Syphilis as well as other tests such as Hepatitis A, B & C, depending on your medical/sexual history.
