Sexual Health & Mental Health Services In Partnership Supporting Pride 2022
Sexual Health & Mental Health teams are once again working in partnership at this year’s Northern Pride event in July
Northern Pride has been one of the pioneering LGBTQ events in the North of England providing rapid access to local health service information. After many years of support from our community-based services, the event Health and Well-being Zone has been a key focal point to which our community-division will once again be supporting. After two years of COVID restrictions Sexual Health and Mental Health will once again be in attendance offering service information and advice for Pride attendees.
Community services such as Sexual Health & Mental Health provide rapid open access and self-referral pathways into services meaning patients to not need referred by a professional when accessing services, however professionals can still refer when needs are identified.
The teams are promoting this self-referral aspect of service delivery including types of provision offered from each such as STI screening, contraception and talking therapies around anxiety and depression. Increasing the public knowledge of rapid service access is a key feature both teams promote, this aims to encourage the public to come forward and access local health services to improve health outcomes in local communities.
Throughout June & July local events such as Pride are a valuable opportunity to showcase our commitment to support and improve the health of LGBT people and the wider community and to also look at how far gay rights have come, particularly in the delivery of LGBT inclusive services.
The Pride March will take place from 12 noon, Saturday 23rd July.
The first of these pride festivals were held in July 2008 and was attended by over 2,500 people. The three-day festival now includes a parade through Newcastle city with entertainment, various LGBTQ+ safe zones, information stalls, and market stalls across the Town Moor, Newcastle plus an array of satellite events on the build-up to the festival which now attracts over 40,000 people.
The theme this year is Remember, Resist, Rise Up and the mission for UK Pride 2022 marking 50 years since the first Pride march took place in the UK.
